Printer Compatibility
We have had a few inquiries about Lightspeed VS-to-PC Print Services and compatibility with certain inexpensive consumer-grade inkjet and laser printers. Most of these use host-based printing such as HP PPA (Printing Performance Architecture) and LIDIL (Lightweight Imaging Device Interface Language) or Canon CAPT and are not supported.
Most GDI printers (printers with Windows Graphical Device Interface commands driver, or so called Windows printers) except some HP models that also support PCL also fall into this category. Any printer using GDI, PPA, LIDIL or any future host-based protocols should be assumed to be incompatible with Lightspeed VS-to-PC Print Services unless they also have a PCL mode.
Our policy, at this time, is not to support these printers. They are typically unsuitable for commercial use and the protocols have a tendency to be short-lived (as was the defunct HP PPA).
HP LIDIL is the current experiment in progress. We found some information on this protocol here. The crucial information from this site is ...
Some newer low-end HP printers support instead of PCL a "host-based" protocol known as LIDIL (Lightweight Imaging Device Interface Language), which is advertised with LDL in the CMD: (command set) field of the device ID string. Such models do not support printing ASCII text.
